When the Rules Rule

Today’s Gospel is a tricky one, often misinterpreted as Jesus basically saying “rules don’t matter.”

But He’s God, so…the rules DON’T necessarily matter for Him (since He’s the one making them) as much as they do for us.

A lot of us have a tricky relationship with rules. Some seem silly and dumb. Some seem particularly outdated. Some seem to be restrictive or demeaning.

And Jesus today invites us to really think about our relationship TO the rules, and how those rules do or do not hinder our relationships. Do we let the rules rule us, or do we rule over the rules? Do the rules sour the way we love others, or do the rules give us room to understand the nuance of human experiences and the gray areas of life?

It’s a Gospel worth praying with for a while, and one that certainly sparks some mediation: do the rules rule me?
